Excellent question! In my mind the modern hard working employee is someone who is engaged to his/her work and employer. Not a robot working24/7 nor someone who neglects family and friends because of the work, but a person who is flexible and in return the employer wants to be flexible.
A hard working employee is one who is committed to his work and timelines, is a smart worker in terms of finding innovation in the work he does and not merely doing it mechanically, is willing to challenge issues and tough situations and is a team spirited player
They don't work for show like staying late when the boss does or coming in early so that they are seen as hard workers. They just work hard and accomplish a lot as a result.
