LTE and wi-max pretty much uses similar radio access techniques, LTE is coming from Euorpean GSM guys as the next4G technology with a new Core (EPC) as well as all IP infrastructure. wi-max is being developed by US IEEE guys. Both are developed for broadband internet.
One main difference from network point of view is that LTE BTS (e-node B) is L-3 capable and has routing capabilities as compared to wi-max BTS.
I think both of them are quite similar but, One of the most different between them
LTE has provided mobility more than WIMAX
that's mean LTE can be overcome the problem of doppler effect
certainly there are technical differences, however they were the candidate tech for4 G by the ITU.
LTE gives better throughput than wimax - latest version , they both can be used mobile and or fixed (wimax16e). Manufacturers preferring lte rather than wimax. even they can use same3.5 GHz frequency.
LTE:- Variable Spectrum Width from1.4 Mhz to20 Mhz..
wimax is designed for only data applications. As it is entirely new technology without any legacy support,it is very costly and requires service provider to install all the equipments.
LTE follow cellular standards such as HSPA, WCDMA, GSM etc but it is designed mainly for data applications. It is also referred as all IP data network. Voice over LTE is also possible using legacy fall backs and using VOIP protocols
The physical layer of WiMAX and LTE is quite similar as both use Orthogonal Frequnecy Division Multiplexing (OFDM) and Multi Input Multi Output (MIMO) Antenna Systems. However the higher layers are implemented differently. Also WiMAX does not always provide mobility. This is the case in Pakistan which was one of the first countries to adopt WiMAX. Here WiMAX is being used as a broadband connection to the home but there is no mobility as the operators do not have license for it.
the main difference between LTE and Wimax is the data rate which can reach400 mbps in LTE
LTE has mobility while WiMax has no mobility.
