I like your question :) .. Well, you can't stop feeding your body so why would you do that for your brain?. Reading and learning are interesting as any other entertaining activity. I update my information constantly not to have a higher social rank but to satisfy my curiosity in the first place.

No one can be expert in everything, you might have partial knowledge, yet not necessary to be expert in every aspect or field.
To be smart, just focus on your specialties in which is your competitive advantage. The specialization will increase your quality and expertise.
Smartness is required in every field and if it is garnished by knowledge then it is deadly combination. Ask a question from yourself do the employer wants a candidate to whom he has to spend huge amount of money , time and resources just to make him understand his job or about his organization or that candidate who know every think about company and his job before joining ? Think like a employer you will get your answer

Definitely not. If you were reasonably smart in all fields you would not master any particular field. What makes you stand out and gain proficiency in any specific job, skill, or field of study is mastery. It is not pertinent that you be smart in everything but that you have mastered something.
Remember that there are new discoveries every day. You should equip yourself to continuously learn. You should always know how to research and find answers, but no one is expecting you to know every thing.
No, it's impossible. But being interested and curious will increase understanding outside ones comfort zone. They say, life begins where comfort zone ends.

I Think Being smart in every field is Counter-Productive . Because in one's effort to be smart in every thing , they'll wind up , unknowingly & unwittingly , not being smart in any thing , I Believe , one should exert every possible effort , & , try their level best to be smart in at least one thing . In other words , to be that good at it , & , to excel in it , while at the same time , & , to a lesser extent , to try their normal effort to know a little bit , quality wise , about every thing else . Especially in fields that are close to their expertise .This way , one can achieve two things . The first of which one's ability to be able to say that they're that good at some thing ( Specialty ) , & , the second of which , they'll be able to engage other people in their field of expertise , equally , as the latter would do with the former .
Today the variety of fields are so wide and so complex that it is impossible to be smart in all of them.
You should focus only to couple and be high level expert in these ones that could be your strongest value.
On the other hand you should choose carefully what are those fields you want to became an expert. In the best case these fields are the most fit areas to you personality and your capability.
Because you should enjoy what you are doing. Without it you can't be motivated and I am sure you can't reach high level skills in your fields.
