I am new to the field of project management, However I have a experience of9+ years in Business development & sales in tourism field and have worked on projects (Unofficially) to deliver results for sales, negotiations & customer relations. Have worked with distributed & multicultural teams in competitive markets like India & developing markets of Africa. I have tried looking up the jobs online but feel that no proper feedback are coming, I am ok with change of profile & field and also on starting out as a project coordinator or a junior project manager subject to the future of that profile. How will you suggest I look for a suitable job.
Gaurav - Here are my thoughts.
Having considerable experience in your area, you certainly would have done certain amount of project management for sure. You have worked with virtual teams (it shows you have communicated well), In Sales, you have worked with numbers - it means you know well about the Cost / Budget and Time.
You worked on building good customers - it means you know something about Scope management, Risk management, etc.
You worked with Vendors - you know something on Procurement management.
project management is a fantastic subject that covers all Sectors / Industries. And anyone who has flair of working in organized way, Results oriented, Ethical & honest - are welcome to explore PM areas.
If you are looking at Project Management specific roles, I suggest you the following -
1. Take up a PM course (ideally for36-40 hours in a good training institute offering PMP). You need not immediately appear for PMP exam, but the course will explain you the concepts well.
2. Relate your work with PM concepts, tweak your Resume accordingly to reflect your knowledge and achievements.
Hope this helps.
Best regards. Ananth
