Would you consider surgical removal of impacted wisdom teeth to prevent decay on adjacent teeth?

If the impacted wisdom with no relation with the adjacent tooth ,it will not affect (horizontal or class c ) so, it isn't prevent or enhance the caries for the adjacent

But in case of mesioangular impaction may be cause a distal caries for the adjacent and removal is the choice

Yes. Its better to remove the foci of infection. If the impacted tooth is hindrance to maintain good oral hygeine it acts as a foci of infection and may lead to decay in the adjacent tooth and periodontitis. 

If erupted and meisoangular in position A or B then definitely should be removed otherwise should be kept for reserve tooth bank for future auto implantation to replace a missing molar tooth.
