Which in my point of view it is not right or it is not the only indicator - Would you choose a20 years of experience but in small and easy projects rather than3 -5 years in mega construction projects accompanied with knowledge and studies ?
No organisation wants to always take freshers and keep training them on the basics of their business as it is time consuming process and need lot of trained/experience personnel to monitor them, so that they can avoid the mistakes committed by the freshers. This is exactly the reason that most companies are asking for persons with experience. At least the company need not spend much time and resources on the basic training. On the other hand, experienced persons can independently handle the work assigned to them and the are more reliable.
Look at that question from an HR perspective and you will know the answer. When you are flooded with applications, certain measure have to be taken to filter out least potential applications. Number of years of experience would help filtering out many applicants thus making things a little easier.
Because it is universal index, it is easy for comparison in first stage of selection. HR look at huge ammount of applicants, and it is hard to look deep on each candidate.
Most of the companies looking for a experience because they rather know that in a difficult situation experience will work not a novice so there is a reason behind choosing an experience person.
To cut expenditures. Hiring an applicant with experience has a shorter learning curve and must be oriented already with the job, making the role adaptation faster. On the other hand, hiring an applicant with lesser experience means more training hours, hands-on practices, more supervision, and longer learning curve.
simply because the no, of years of experience doesn't only refer to the amount of work only but refers to many issues like being inside communities of certain fields discussing a lot of solutions,problems , developing ideas, wrong ideas,clarifications , discussing both of old and modern techniques used in this fields ,advantages and disadvantages of anything related to the field of the work.....so after all, years of experience definitely is not only about the number but it is about the contributions and amount of discussions he had done it is about how he is mentally strong and well aware of his field of experience ,not about the amount of physical work as most of us think but it is about the amount of mental work and mental .awareness
I do disagree with some of the opinions that state experience is the key quality. Actually what is the difference between a foreman (20+years Exp.) and an Engineer (3-5 years) ; Simply the Engineer is very well educated. I see Experience as gaining a new information in a timely manner; this contradict with having many years of experience in similar projects. In my point of view and in my life experience, i found out that if someone has been working in a different projects and gaining knowledge + certificates through few years is much more worthy to the companies than many years experience in similar projects.
