All you have to do is build your business, take care of it, keep your customers happy, and your reputation will build itself :)

It takes a lot of patience if you don't have immense funding lets say. Either ways, you'd need a philosophy attached to your business model that'd distinguish you from your niche.Holding on to this and delivering with the values you have set over a period of time can help you get your signature mark or lets say reputation over a wide network. The same goes with a title i guess.

In business, building your reputation starts with a clear vision & mission of your business plus a compelling business target.  Discipline are built around this including processes, acceptable working culture that are respectful & inclusive, reward system & a clear understanding of team & individual targets for each review period or each business cycle.  Exercise meritocracy .... reward performance, show empathy & decisiveness.  Do not compromise on standards that you have set for your business. Walk the talk and show leadership. Don't tolerate tardiness at the workplace.  The team must be engaged regularly & there must be a system to promote participation & ownership so that staff will treat the business as their own.  Reward & celebrate them.  There's more to be said but these are a few key areas.

Although your question lays on the general side, I assume that you have the basic enterepreneurial spirit essential for building a small business. However, to build the desired reputation for your business:

1. You should mentain a stable value proposition,

that actually adds value to your customer's purchase decision. You should always be asking yourself "Why my customer would be WILLING TO PAY for my product or service?". Never assume that you are ok with what you currently have, believe that other entrepreneurs can be smarter than you. Keep adding value to your business and be generous.

2. Reputation is mostly a marketing outcome,

simply make some noise, make your business an interactive business that integrates customer's opinions and to value their feedback, for that social media is a great tool to entice that spark between your business and your customers. Also, ensure that you have picked a suitable but yet creative name for your business that can grasp the attention of your targeted segements.

3. Plow back100% of your gross profit margin

into your business development and improvments, that will be highly noticed by your loyal customers and it will ensure a great level of sustainability.

3. Be organized and make sure that your front line team treat your customers professionaly

friendly and have them to keep smiling. Always remember that people are the core of any business, therfore it is a great idea to give your team an incentive that keeps them motivated to deliever quality in thier task execution and work behaviors.

4. Technology is always attractive

we live in the new age and technology is the greatest tool to utilize for your business, wether you wanted to organize your workflow or give your customers a better image of your product/service.

5. Be always on the look for new ideas, analyse and read read read

because the more you read about similar products/services the more knowledgable you'd become and be motivated to develop and excel in it.

Dear Fida,

Here are a few tips, ideas and ways as to how do you build, keep and maintain a business reputation:

1. Be professional at al times, this includes you, your staff, your employees and your family members (if possible).

2. Build your customer care, and customer service policies from day one and stick to them. Always give your customers110%.

3. Try to incorporate and build your USP into your reputation, for example if your USP is to offer24/7 customer care then tell people about this.

4. Reinforce your reputation, by this I mean keep your word, be trustworthy, honest and reliable, stick to and keep any promises you make be it to a customer or to a supplier.

5. Decide what you want your company reputation to be built on, is it good value, affordable prices, honesty and so on and create a mission statement that works around this, use and reinforce this message as and wherever necessary.

6. Plan ahead, when building a reputation its always best to plan ahead, by this I mean plan how you will build your reputation where and when, for example will it be built by you, your staff and your company checking prices to make sure they are competitive or could it perhaps be based on you and your business/company doing more community work and projects.

Whatever reputation you want to build up, its best to start planning and putting it into action from day one.

7. Start and carry on mingling, networking and meeting new people - this is a good way to build up a company reputation - as no doubt your company and its reputation will be talked about in a positive light through both referrals and word of mouth. So be a people person.

TIP: Don't be afraid to seek professional advice wherever and whenever required. Getting advice and assistance early on can help put a stop to any problems that may occur a little further down the line.

TIP: Remember that building a reputation takes time, hard work, dedication and patience, you cannot expect it to all happen overnight.

I hope you have found my advices helpful and useful, good luck with your business, I wish you every success Fida.

Regards,

Reputation management is one of today’s hottest small business topics. It’s the process of monitoring, managing and influencing what’s being said about your business online (especially in social media) in places like Facebook, Yelp, Twitter and blogs.

But your online reputation is an extension of your reputation in the real world – what I call your “Baseline Business Reputation” or BBR.  It takes place across all touch points you have with customers and prospects.

For many business owners, reputation has literally meant everything.  It’s one area small firms have always felt they can beat out even the biggest competitors.

But it’s a mistake to believe that social media offers a shortcut to reputation riches. Sure, reputations can soar – or sink – rapidly online. But for most small and local firms, reputation is something earned over time.

Key elements of reputation-building that business owners most frequently cite include the human qualities of integrity, honesty, reliability and exceeding expectations. In addition, building trust and a good reputation requires that the business delivers good quality products and services, along with good value.

Here are eight ways to build your baseline business reputation:

  1. Build bottom-up credibility. Start by delivering what you promise. And the best way to do that is to first under-promise, and then over-deliver. A sure-fire reputation buster is to make claims or promises that aren’t met – in your advertising, in person, by your employees or in the hours you post but don’t keep.  This means vastly more than posting a plaque on your window, wall or website touting membership in the local chamber of commerce, Better Business Bureau or your professional association.
  2. Deliver some R&R – as in Responsiveness and Reliability. To develop a good reputation for responsiveness, be a stickler for communication and resolve complaints quickly. If there’s a mistake or delay, own up to it and make extra effort to fix the problem quickly. An apology helps too. A complaining customer can become your biggest supporter if the complaint is resolved quickly and effectively.  At the same time your baseline reputation benefits.
  3. Offer exceptional value. Customers and clients define value differently, so this can involve many different things. You might, for example, offer free service or product support for a period of time, or offer discounts and special perks to loyal customers.  Providing something unexpected, such as a giveaway or free sample, is a good value- and reputation-building tactic. And paying attention to details – making sure a product is spotless on delivery, for example – scores big value and reputation points.
  4. Be privacy sensitive. In addition to guarding sensitive information (credit card slips, for example) and honoring permission-based mailing and email lists, this also means providing a discrete area to discuss financial or other sensitive matters, such as medical issues at a drug store.
  5. Demonstrate tech proficiency. A business that uses antiquated technology will have a reputation as being, well, antiquated. These days, being tech and internet savvy is critical to being perceived as competent and capable as a business. Keep your computers, mobile devices, printers, email and voicemail systems, software, websites and social media pages up to date.
  6. Communicate selectively and effectively. Keep letters, emails and voicemails short, to the point, professional and productive. Use correct spelling and always leave contact information, even if you think the recipient has it. Make sure your company information – full name, address, phone, fax, website URL, toll free number, hours and other vital information – is displayed in prominent locations.
  7. Make your website polished and professional.  A clean, up-to-date, professional looking website is absolutely vital today, regardless of the type or size business you have. It doesn’t need to be big or fancy, but it does need to be accurate and up to date.
  8. Do community service. A little selfless generosity toward local organizations or your community goes a long way toward helping building trust and a positive reputation.
