It all comes down to breaking down the project into manageable work packages and each have a assigned leader, then closely follow-up on work packages that are not delivering to schedule, find out the reason for not delivering and then taking action to get them back on schedule. This may mean adding resource to complete the delayed task or maybe just clarifying the task scope. Action would depends on the nature of the project.
