What was/ is the best passenger aircraft ever designed?

I believe its the B777 that also has the ER version. This is the best for fuel efficiency (2 engine), passenger loads and cargo loads. So this would be the best commercial pick.

There are a number of candidates, the VC10, Boeing707, then the ubiquitous Boeing747 (Jumbo) and latterly the Boeing777 and the Airbus380. My personal favourite and the forerunner of ALL modern day passenger airliners was the De Havilland Comet.
