Since HART devices are field instruments, why they are preferred on other simple instruments?
Simply, the HART (Highway Addressable Remote Transducer) Protocol is the global standard for sending and receiving digital information across analog wires between smart devices and control or monitoring system.
More specifically, HART is a bi-directional communication protocol that provides data access between intelligent field instruments and host systems. A host can be any software application from technician's hand-held device or laptop to a plant's process control, asset management, safety or other system using any control platform.
HART devices are devices having HART communication protocol capability. HART signal is a small strength alternating signal that are super imposed on the standard4 ...20 mA signal on the same wire. HART is bidirectional and polarity insensitive.
HART protocol opened the possibility of having more information from the device rather than the quantity it measures. In other words, if you are measuring the flow using a differential pressure transmitter, using HART you can get information about static pressure as well. Also, you can get diagnostic data, calibration data and settings related to that device. Moreover, using hand held calibrators with HART communication you can change settings of HART capable devices from the control room where their cables are connected without even going to their places.
HART is also used as a core for building asset management applications in which data collection from all field devices installed is mandatory.
HART mean Highway Addressable Remote Transducer, and devices which use this phenomenon to transfer data between sensor and controller and provide better compatibility with calibration devices such as HHT (Hand Held Transducer) are called HART Devices.
