There's a lot of differences but the main difference is that:

1-Photoshop is for bitmap and pixel image, image editing and retouching.2-Illustrator is for vector image, drawing and colouring

Photoshop is a pixel based software. It aims to edit, modify, create and overall manipulate picture or any kind of pixel based content. It is mostly a picture editing software. Since it is a pixel editing software, it is based on an RGB ( Red, Green Blue) preset, which is best seen on screens.

Also, basic designs made on Illustrator are then enhanced in photoshop with elements such as shadowing, blurs and so forth. Since it is pixel based, it often creates rather big files.

Illustrator is a vector based software. Vectors can be translate in mathematical equation, which means they can be enlarged or diminished without losing quality. Vectors are often flatter images with single colors and simple shapes (Often-not always). Illustrator is sometimes used to create the base layout which will be enhanced in photoshop later on. Since the drawings/shapes are made through vectors, it creates very small files. Illustrator is CMYK (Cyan Magenta Yellow Black) Based, which means it is intended for printing. Settings can be changed to have RGB ( Photoshop can be switched to CMYK). The colors seen on the screen on CMYK won't be the100% the ones we see printed since the color creation is different (itll also depend on your screen quality and resolution)

Another difference between photoshop and illustrator is the workspace. Photoshop only contains a single workspace, on which we cannot exceed the boundaries. Illustrator can create many different workspaces or "artboards" which allow us to experiment for logo design and banner designs.

Photoshop allows us to save mostly in PSD, JPEG, PNG and other image related endings while illustrator will allow .AI and .PDF. It is possible to export the works in image related endings but it is not a default option in the "save as"

The answers concerning the difference of Photoshop and Illustrator are exact. But to know the difference between them both, you have to try them yourself. And, the best way to learn the Adobe collection software in through the Adobe Classroom in a book.I, being an Adobe Certified Expert, advise these books because they made me an expert, and I taught them for12 years to my students, and results were fascinating.

The main difference is Photoshop is raster (pixel) based where Illustrator is vector based. You can use both programs to draw and colour images and Illustrator has Live Paint features for colouring as well as regular Swatches. Photoshop is ideal for image/photo manipulation where Illustrator would be the best choice if you're creating a logo for example or anything you may want to be able to scale up at some stage - being vector based you won't lose quality as you would if you scaled a Photoshop document. You can place a scanned image in Illustrator and use Live Trace to convert it to vector art.

Illustrator is a drawing program, it helps in creating artworks that can be scaled infinitely. Photoshop is an image manipulation and creation tool, it has features and tools that helps editing pixel base graphics easier than ever.

Photoshop and Illustrator are two different programs that offer very different things. Photoshop is mainly for photo manipulation but you can also do some drawing on it but it is not as good as Illustrator. Illustrator is a vector based program which allows you to draw vector items. Vector is math based and will basically allow you more freedom if you are going to create something that will need to be various sizes since vector shapes are 'math' based you won't have problems with things being pixelated when they are made larger. Most Graphic Artists use a combination of both programs, I do. I would recommend looking into getting the adobe creative suite as was recommended in your first answer as well. Also take a look at some tutorial sites for Photoshop and Illustrator and also look at books that show you how to use each program. These are professional programs that do a lot and they cost a lot of money as well but both are very, very good and are the industry standard.
