How are blogging and SEO related?

Both rely on each other!

Blogging needs SEO to flourish & have ROI & SEO needs blogging to bring about excellent content-based optimization of search engine results (for company, website, product, service, topic, keywords)

But blogging needs SEO more than SEO needs blogging as SEO has other "victims" to exploit. :-)

Blogging is nothing without SEO, mean if you are writing a blog, you need some audience to read your blog. So from SEO, we can get an audience who read your blogs.

so I think SEO is the backbone for a blog.

SEO helps online users find your blog and drive traffic to your blog. Blog is dependent on SEO but SEO is not dependent on blog.

Your blog might have awesome content but without proper SEO it will find hard to get noticed. A blog with decent content and proper SEO implemented will get more visbility than an awesome one with poor SEO.

As we all know "Content is King" is the main tag line of the SEO industry for a very long time but how do I place content on my site on a particular service/product. You cannot put stories, real life events, tips and tricks in you corporate site. So how to put content and keep on adding fresh content was the main question for many business. Then came the idea of incorporation a web-log (or the Blog) in your corporate site. You can add it many things that interest you and enrich your website with varied and interesting content.

This became the biggest weapon for SEO, as it caters to the need of content wherein you can target long tail versions of your business keywords and make it interesting for your target audience to keep re-visiting your site.
