Good one!

I was recently told by a seasoned recruiter that such questions are meant to see the way you define the word "gap" for yourself, ignoring the negative connotation. There should be no such thing called "gap" in your professional dictionary and you should (subtly) defy the word-choice in your answer. You simply have been out of standard employment but you must have done something useful in this time, haven't you? Concentrate on your own reasons, not the external ones. Think about:

  1. Self-study
  2. Part-time job combined with gaining specialized experience in a sub-branch.
  3. Voluntary or humanitarian work
  4. Freelance consultation work
  5. A personal (sympathy & respect commanding reason): spend more time with family & kids, after years of putting your heart, time & effort at work! Why not?
  6. A needed vacation to re-arrange life priorities & the next step in career, which proved a sound choice!

You can always give them what they like to hear and be cleverly maneuvering or give them what you want them to hear: frankness, reliability & self-assurance!

1-Constant challenge and recognition of the need to be creative. Also engagement with Customers and clients and managing staff will give me the job satisfaction that I am looking for.

2- My ability to identify problems and propose solutions, and maintain good working relationships with colleagues and customers are my strong points. Conversely I have been told that sometimes I take on too much work and find the going hard.

In Search for better opportunity, will be my answer, but it is very tuff to explain the interviewer as only negative strikes in his mind about our gap in employment history.

Consider everything you were doing during that time (such as travel, volunteer work, internships, training, family projects) and if possible, present them so they're relevant to your job objective.

The person screening it can read it as a negative: you might be a job-hopping flight risk … you seemingly can’t hold down a job … perhaps you don’t get along with others well … there may have been performance issues that got you fired – the imagination creates all kinds of possible scenarios!

In my opinion you need to be pro-active and bold " You don’t need to go into long-winded or detailed explanations. All you need is a brief phrase, in parenthesis, following the dates of each short-lived position. For example: “Laid Off Due To Economic Circumstances” … or “Position Was Eliminated” … or “Company Went Out of Business,” etc. What this does is provide the screener with a perfectly valid explanation for the short stint,...............(Of course, if you actually were fired for cause … well, that’s another story!)

I think that would be the best Idea to tell them that you were on vecation or any other family problem because once you will tell them that because of not satisfy with jobs or dont want to get back they will ask questions from your answer and will try to caught your lie that what was the reason of leaving the job and that Gap.

haha totally a realistically relevant question .. Every interviewer acts as a criticizer rather than play a critique and assume that you must have done something negative during your tenure, or (have a bad habit of job-hopping which is a serious case in the current world scenario) .. But then again, the portion where you mention on your CV as to why you left your previous job gives support to your gap non-the-less, and all you have to do is explain professionally about the scenario without giving a negative vibe about the organization or yourself .. Think of it as a way of 'Getting to a higher ground for greater challenges and exploring better career opportunities' ..
