Solar energy seems to have picked up in Pakistan, and with natural resources depleting renewable energy is a wonderful concept. Not an option for all classes unfortunaely due to the high initial cost of installation, but it lives up to its promise.
Solar and wind turbines are targetted at a niche market in Pakistan & as the electricity crises increases day by day, more and more people who 'can' opt for it are opting for renewable energy options.
It is long on promise, short on delivery; but we all have to keep on improving it, because it's definitely the savior of the future, too.
Solar Energy is definitely a technology for the future. Its true that the initial installation cost of a Solar System is still out of range for some people but if we look at the rate the cost is coming down we would see that in about10-20 years this technology would be quite common e.g. in2008 a50 Watt Solar Panel used to cost17,000 PKR (Pakistani rupees) but the cost of the same panel is now around5000 PKR. But the cost of a Solar System does not only depend upon the cost of Solar Panels. There are other components that one needs to buy such as Charge Controller, Battery and Inverter. Amongst these a Battery is the most expensive component and needs to be replaced every1-2 years (unlike Solar Panels which last about25 years). One approach to not buy the batteries is to used a Grid Tied Inverter which sells energy to the grid during the day and takes energy from the grid at night.
