It would depend on the kind of job I have and its work requirements. If it's something that has complex graphical/GUI demands e.g. graphic designing for electronic and print media or layout designing and animation, statistical graphic representations,3D modeling etc then I'd request for a iMac / Macbook pro. Apple has a wide range of Mac OS X laptops (MacBooks) and desktop computers. Although all Apple Macs are great, some are better suited to design than others.
I'd highly recommend the following for this:
MacBook Pro with Retina Display
27-inch iMac
Other than that if my job wasn't related to the above mentioned and more business related with requirements of word processesing/productivity, required usage of MS office tools and utilities etc Then I'd list the following specifications as my requirements (Based on current technology):
DESKTOP Configuration:
19-inch HD monitor (Any decent brand)
Core i73.0* ghz Processor (preferably factory overclocked for optimum performance)
8 GB DDR3 RAM
1 Terabyte Hard-drive (internal)
2 GB DDR5 Graphic Acceleration VGA card (preferably nVidia though Radeon's are fine as well but have heating issues)
Proper Liquid cooling for the system (to ensure smooth extensive usage of the system)
Appropriate power supply, casing with USB port offerings etc.
Laptop Configuration:
Any Alienware or good branded laptops (16 to17-inch not higher with more or less the above listed requirements)
Congrats on becoming a moderator! You'll make a good one!
If it is a PC, I will choose by exclusion and disqualify Dell, not because of quality but because it will most likely be the one I'm using at work & I like to personalize my “home computing experience”. I’m actually a loyal fan of Taiwanese Acer computers, but I learned that they have a different quality perception in the Middle East than the ones made for EU. I don’t use MAC as personal computer, only for work if needed. Other than that, Sony is a good brand too!
Windows8 with Office2010, iCore7, hard disk at least1TB,8-GB, will do till the next better thing shows up.
Mac is best and custombuilt is best too.. on my part as PC user I still stick on PC a thermal flake specs most of the hardware specially on case and coolant. a Corei7 turbo boosters and later processor eg3rd gen and32GB ram, best video card for graphic design NVIDIA titan double slot. A very nice LED27" monitor.. So I think there is no better answer on choosing a brand but instead how much will be the budget. and the budget will play on specs of pc or mac and other brands.. yes it plays on specs...
on my side.. " I love Custom Built."
i7,8 Gb RAM,500 MB SATA HDD, Lenovo ThinkPAD, with carbon fiber body,6 cell battery backup of6 hrs
nothing can defeat this product, not even MAC as windows8 and8.1 is universal and better compatibility with most of the softwares.
One of the best laptops in industry with realibility and durability as already tested in past
For designing purposes, always go for the Macintosh. The color calibration is the best to use. Try and go for the27 inch Cinema Display monitor as an external monitor. Yes, its very expensive but its a very good investment when it comes to design.
Well for desktop if my company has budget i will definately go for HP EliteOne800
I don't looking for the brand, but you should looking for specificationsm, some of my colleagues below said mac and other said hp, samsung... etc, but for me as designer and project manager looking always for high preformance the highest CPU with Highest cash is better, high RAM memory is better, but me always looking for high Deticated Graphic Card, check the image belowthis is why microsoft make it in each windows.
i will go to HP Desktop ( workstations z620 ) this one is hi-end config for all type of designing work
BUT the ideal is (as minimum)
core i3, i5
8GB ram
nVidia Graphic
500GB HDD
hope u like it

Dell is the best brand and most of the multinational companies giving Dell due to carrying out the hard work and good in communicating with the company system
As a designer I know i will need a large screen. So at least17" screen.
Intel core i7
a good level of ram (at least8gb, if you can get16 even better)
a very very good graphics card (google will tell you whats best)
I would avoid Mac because they are hardly upgradable, and Sony Vaios because they are known to have Fan problems. No matter the computer, google its problems so you'd know what to expect.
