How are excellent writing skills acquired: through education, practice? Or do you think that it is a talent that one is born with?

"Writing-skills" here refers to both formal & informal writing.

I would say it comes through a lot of reading in varied topics, reading a lot of books, magazines, newspapers, articles on the internet or just about anything interesting.  The person must be an avid reader.  An academic degree doesn't necessarily makes anyone an excellent writer.  In fact there are too many renowned writers without formal degrees in education.  It stems from an innate desire to read, grasp, ponder and release.

I have once read a quote that says " in order to write a book, you need to read a library" and i believe that saying.

Writer's fame can be achieved through proper education and practice, but the talent itself is tied to the passion for writing. Words are powerful weapon, and the ability to deliver a though to the reader is the essence

All these  factors apply, however the only way to become more adept at one's skill is to practice consistently

Talent, practice and education - all three are contributing factors in acquiring good writing skills.

From talent comes the will to practice, practice leads to wanting to learn and learning more increases the will to want to improve.

As they say practice is the best teacher....you may have a talent but it is only realized after days and days of polishing

I do not believe in tallent that one is born with rather than practice and education. I do and still believe in hard work. If you want to reach any step just do your best, you will reach it sooner or latter.

If you love something , and make it as your goal, and work for it. Be sure, you will take it. If we believe that writing is instinct so noone will take any step because they are waiting for miracle to rise them, and this is impossible.

Initially it's through talent and praise that pushes you forward to enhance your writng through eduaction. Practicing after this, like through expeirence period, will perfect your natural talent and make it more than a hobby.

When I was a little girl, they used to tell me I had two left feet. It didn't matter how hard I tried, dancing was not my God sent talent. Though I was convinced otherwise. I remember being once at a friend's birthday party, and we were discussing who among us might be the best dancer. Deeply convinced with my grace and my inborn talent, I made a couple of jumps on the dance floor not knowing I actually looked more like a wild goose on the run than a graceful gazelle (which ironically enough is what my name stands for). But as my little "numero" ended more with laughter than claps, I realized at that moment that my inborn talent was only a fantasy... It didn't mean that I was doomed to never be able to dance in my life, just that those ballerinas and tutus my mother and I occasionally dreamed about were not taking my to Broadway anytime soon... I believe that writing is much like dancing if not a specific genre of dance where we sway gently and delicately to the rhythm of words. And even though it can be taught like so many other arts, rules, principles, practice, education and an endless thirst for reading are essential to tune it and develop it properly, they can rarely alone turn it into an exceptional masterpiece.

Everyone has the flair of writing.

We all tend to write down the unexplainable thoughts and the feeling of pain.

In different forms, be it rambling, or poems or stories.

Some make it their living and some are just fine with letting it be restricted to their personal journals.

Hence, we know what it is?

And yeah practice does make you a connoisseur.
