First analyze what are the strengths and weakness of the employee to whom you need to give the feedback. Make yourself confident that you are well aware of the person's strengths and weakness. Once you are confident of complete understanding of the person, your fear will vanish. Even after that, if it exists, start a discussion, probe where he is able to talk about his own strengths and weakness and as a friend or a guide, you suggest him the changes and say what you feel about his strengths and weakness and give the feedback in a very friendly manner. As a manager you should never be afraid to give a feedback. Wish you all the best.

The Key is for your employee to trust you as a leader and an individual. When you have the employee's respect you can start by telling them everything they've been doing well and the value that work has added to the company. Then you can give them some suggestions/feedback on things they should work on to improve they're portfolio/skill level/performance. That's what I've done with my employees in the past with pretty good success.
