Good morning Mr. Fazal. Yes, I totally agree. Just for this reason I feel it is particularly appropriate to possess a robust multicultural living and working experience, to be a good manager (I'd say: never thinking 'to have the truth in your own pocket', as the truth is in reciprocally shaking hands and smiling eyes).

Very Correct, Management is more complex issue than a rocket science since we deal with thinking minds who often questions each and every thing and evaluate it within their own parameters. There is no specific formula which fits in each and every situation/environment/ culture etc.

The truth is, that some major principles should be respected to every culture and shouldn't change. I mean in all countries, the economies should pay more attention to the environment because this is all that we have, more respect for the human health and work and there shouldn't be child labor for instance. But, all major companies pollute the environment or fulfil the least actions demanded by governments to "correct" some situations, human work in some countries is synonymous to a slavery being in a factory from early in the morning until midnight and all over the world there is defininately child labor and that, in our century is a crime!

To sum it up, some companies in order to achieve the highest profit, proceed to tactics that aren't ethical and logical. This is not acceptable but unfortunately is still happening. Money is sweet and many people in the world are suffering, in order for some "superior people" , live in sheer luxury and not a care in the world!

Principles are Principles, but the culture and environment impact in the application of those principles.

I don't agree. At least management principles are not only behavioral aspects and they shouldn't alter with environment, culture, or requirements. I also know that some managers claim that, but I see that they are only trying to justify their behaviors. On the other hand laws and regulations do impact management principles and managers can't help it in these cases.

I also see that new technologies may cause confusion such as cloning and merciful killing!

I agree to disagree.

Management principles should not alter with culture, environments and requirements.

Of course you have to adapt and respect cultures, environment and requirements but your integrity and ethical values should overide any unethical and negative aspects.

Very good question that needs to be debated in detail.

  1. Management principlesare (only) behaviouralaspects? Yes, but not that only.
  2. Do they alter with environment, culture and requirements? But off course.

This does not imply that such alteration or change is preferred, but it does take place due to powerful factors that cause principles of management to bend and become flexible in order to be effective. When dealing with principles such as: Division of Wrok, Authority, Unity of Command, Subordination of Individuality to the General Interest, culture plays a vital role.

Famous Dutch organizational culture, culture economics & management author & Professor of Organizational Anthropology and International Management, Geert Hofsetde, developed a so-called the “Culture Dimension Theory”, adding the following powerful mix to management theory:  Power Distance, Individualism, Uncertainty avoidance, Masculinity, and Long Term Orientation.

If we take “Power Distance” for example, is means that some (regional) cultures have well-defined cultural values and views towards power.

  1. In some countries (say African & Middle Eastern countries) “power” is FAR and unreachable and condoned & tolerated as such. A subordinate will think three times before disagreeing with a top manager or even engage in a non-formal interaction. A less authoritative manager may be viewed as “soft”.
  2. In other countries (say, Scandinavian countries) "power" is CLOSE, as it is entrenched in the business culture that ALL are equals on some basic human interaction rules, whether on or off work floor. An overly authoritarian manager who’s rough with employees will be viewed as “incompetent” & can be voted out.

Management principles should not alter with culture in a utopian world but YES they do alter with culture.  Culture is powerful enough to command such adaptation.

I break your question into2 parts

Management principles are only behavioral aspects - Disagree

Management principles alter with enviroment, culture and requirements - Agree

I would exclude in management principles, values and ethics. These should not be affected with the enviroment, culture or requirements

The business enviroment is very competitive and hence a manager should adopt to the requirements  of every customer. This may at times require to overlook certain aspects of managment principles and management methodologies. As mentioned above, "certain aspects" should not harm the culture  & goodwill of the company

It is very true that major principles should be respected to every culture and shouldn't change. (should pay more attention to the environment because this is all that we have, more respect for the human health and work and there shouldn't be forced labor )
