Never use a spell checker as it will not pick up on words which a spelt correctly, but in the wrong context, e.g. where and were. The only option is to use a copywriter or copy editor.
Proof reading. After finishing writing we have to reread the text until it is mistake free. Now it has become more easy in the computer age as we can formate it on computer using different software tools.
Spell check on a computer will solve one of the issues, unfortunately it won't sort out your grammar. Personally I tend to be old fashioned and will rarely even use "spell check", proof reading is the only way to go in my humble opinion.99% of the time I can tell by reading whether my writing is grammatically correct and whether I have made any spelling errors. Should I have any doubts about how a word is spelt I will straight away refer to a dictionary. The other1% I hope I can get away with!!!!!!
As the editor in chief of a newspaper, I always ask my journalists to read their article twice before sending it to the proof reader.
