working for longer periods differ from one person to another, it's either a career need or an employee's self attitude, however in the second one this is mostly and addiction that one gets used to it due to passion that arises between the employee and the nature of his/her job, but the first one is either because the work done through time is not very much, the work nature consumes a lot of idle time breaks, employee's focus on work and productivity is at low rates or work is dependent on other outputs as an income and these are very slow in producing the required outcome.
Workers are working very long hours to achieve a minimum level of output or to achieve some minimum level of wages.
To kill the time. Cover inefficiency, to earn more money by way of overtime.
I'm not a fan of putting in Long Hours at work not unless it's an essential requirement sometimes that would significantly benefit the organization and myself. On the contrary I advise people to work smart and efficiently during the official hours and to not allow it to come to the situation where putting in extra hours become necessary.
For the following reasons:
1. They work for themselves.
2. They are trying to impress someone (the boss?}.
3. They are overworked.
4. They have very limited lives outside their work environment (lack of social life).
5. They are very INEFFICIENT
There should always be "balance" in our lives and all the above examples show or demonstrate a lack of balance!!
Over load of work.
