Job seekers differ in terms of the amount of self-education. Yet, this is not shown in CVs. How can this issue be addressed?

To a recruiter or potential employer, the CVs of many job seekers may be assessed the same. Yet the amount of self-education these job seekers have varies. Some are even highly self-educated, and it is a mutual loss for both the prospective employer and job seeker not to choose from those. In your opinion, how can or should considerable self-education be mentioned in the CV to avoid having it eliminated by the employer? Remember self-education is not documented. How do you perceive this, and what is your opinion?

That is a good question! I think this can be brought up during interviw when the recruiter is asking: What can you tell me about yourself? Here you can promote your passion for self improovement!

Dear Saba,

Usually, we do not assess self employment in primary short listing criteria, but we consider it interview when candidate indicates that s/he has relevant skill on this issue. It is a great chance to prove his or practical learning that increases the chances of fit for the job.

I think you should state your skills and abilities on your CV. List all the qualifications you may have that meet the criteria of the job. And at the interview you'll be able to elaborate on the topic and reiterate the skills and abilities learned from self education.

This is true, especially the online certificates which has no credits and even training at work has no value at employer on judgement of qualities and skills a job seeker has. I would end up recommending to the recruiters to consider that strongly because some of online courses are more rich and advanced in skills.

Even prior to interview and shortlisting candidates the job seeker could add more skills and talents to be clearly shown to the employer agents.

I noticed that many online applications give an open area to mentioned the important things strngthen your application.

Excellent question, as if somebody had asked this on my behalf, being self-taught and still learning all the skills that I use professionally in graphic design, printing, signage, web hosting, web design & photography.

In a head to head comparison between a Degree Holder and a "Self-Educated" individual, there should be bigger favor given to the Degree holder for several reasons;1. Knowledge of the theoretical aspect of the profession; Like a self-educated individual may know that he need to provide lighting in the corner of the room, but he may not know WHY he need to provide that lighting, compared to a Degree Holder wherein he may have a concept/statement why he need to provide that lighting in the corner of the room;2. Experience as normally degree holders had their "apprenticeship"; normally self-educated individuals learned by experience;3. And for Licensed professions, code of ethics.
