What is the difference between a designer and an artist?

Artist – a person who produces works in any of the arts that are primarily subject to aesthetic criteria.

Designer – a person who devises or executes designs,  especially one who creates forms, structures, and patterns, as for works of art or machines.

Those don’t put any clear difference in the meaning. So we will have to create one ourselves for now:

Designer – we will view designers as trained people with vast knowledge in rules of the design process, how to use different elements to ones benefit, meaning of colors etc.

Artist - artists will be those guys out there, who probably are self-taught, they have a basic understanding of the rules out there and saw their use in multiple occasions, but in their work they tend to go their own ways.

The design is part of the art, using specific tools either artist is on the lookout for all the arts in all its forms and has absolute freedom to use anything to express his art

Art is your own thinking and creativity but in design you are bound on his fix values.

You can be a designer if you study the basics or have a college degree. So, you can practice and work as a designer. But, the artist who is the one who has talent and the gift of skills.

The Arts encompasses several fields, one of which is Design. A designer is an artist.  His medium is on visual arts.  He or she is usually called a visual artist.

Other artists include:

1. performing artists, such as thespians, singers, dancers, etc..

2. literary artists like writers, poets, novelists, playwrights, etc..

3. visual artists like fine artists, designers, etc.

and many more

Designer designs with the tools specified. An artisit draws with the tools of his own.

A Designer is an Artist of a Particular

Discipline. An Artist is the Designer of that Discipline.

artist is more generalist type of a person if you wanna call some one artist , artist will usually be working without many specifications upon a task , letting his vision go free most of the time.

Designer on the other hand is usually said upon a person who will follow specific rules and perform certain things in order to get a desired design or a work of art needed for his task or role to be done. 

both artist and designer share many similarities but in the same time their outcome is usually different .

A Designer can only work based on theory of art and what have they learned from school and most of the designer could not apply actually the desired design by there own self such as paintings, wall effect paintings, carvings and other art works An Artist is a natural God given talent since birth which cannot be teach in school..the school can only teach you the basic art but not to become an artist An Artist is creative he or she can create any form of art works even in a limited materials or even only the available materials on his sorroundings

Everyone is born as an Artist. But they have to make a choice to become Designer.
