How do you write a title that will make people want to click and read more?

"I was shopping today and lost my hat"...Will you read that?

"When I was shopping today, suddenly this happens! "  And how about this one?

You need to know how to make people curious :)

7 Ingredients of a Click Worthy Title

Assuming all other factors neutral for the moment, let's look at what I think are 7 most important ingredients of your titles;

1. Curiosity
2. Benefit
3. Emotion
4. Tangible
5. Appearance
6. Sound
7. Expectation

This is a very broad subject & in this limited opportunit the above is what I can answer.

1. Play (but don’t prey) on people's innate nature of being curious intelligent beings. Give them something that will make them curious to follow-through with their instant perception of the weird, unconventional, challenging, or inviting short title you have.
2. Place yourself in their shoes (or in this case, their seat behind the PC or carrying a tablet or a smart phone) and imagine what would make YOU "wanna" click on read more in order to know more.
3. Important: don’t forget to add "read more" a visibly and visually clear way, while breaking your text in the right place.
4. Don’t fail them or fool them with a follow-up to the story or news that is anything but interesting, or they will ignore your upcoming posts.

By being creative, trendy, pro active and savvy 

Varies depending on the target audience  But it must be the fact that the title is going to ask either or be shocking for the target group

All answers are great. i agree with all answers (untill the current date!). I would add: using numbers ...

Like "7 Steps to get rid of your obesity", or "10 mistake every manager does". Also using the questions, and funny palying with words (including the misspelling & grammer mistakes on purpose, but you should mention that), like "Pro-teens most important protien", or "iPhone, iPad, and I Paid" or "ARTeries", and so on. You always can depend on the hot topics, like "World Cup for teens" (instead of14, which represents2014)". Using bold fonts, using capital letters also could be useful.

Becareful that if your content is not interesting as the title, the audience will not complete reading. Of course you don't just want clicks, you need someting more.

its depend on the subject or topic if the topic is interesting the people will like to read....

If you are aiming to get people like yourself to click, put yourself in the shoes of the person and do a test run. If you think its attractive enough to deserve a click, go with it. If not, rephrase the title. Thats the general thumb rule with content generation. Like others already mentioned, the idea is to create curiosity and generate some sort of excitement. 

if you have regular readers than do not cheat them,,be fair and orginal on your topics , titles etc,,,, title must be the essence of your writing.
