The Internet Protocol (IP) is the method or rules by which data is sent from one computer to another in the network. Each computer (host) on the network has at least one IP address that uniquely identifies it from all other computers in the network.
When you send or receive data (for example, an e-mail note or a Web page), the message gets divided into packets. Each of these packets contains both the sender's Internet address and the receiver's address. Any packet is sent first to a gateway computer that understands a small part of the network. The gateway computer reads the destination address and forwards the packet to an adjacent gateway that in turn reads the destination address and so forth across the Internet until one gateway recognizes the packet as belonging to a computer within its immediate domain. That gateway then forwards the packet directly to the computer whose address is specified.
The main purpose of IP is to provide a significant addressing technique to a network and its elements. The process of addressing employs that each node within the network must have a distinct address (or IP address) for individual communication sessions. During inter-network communication sessions, IP is used to provide a single address to entire network as well, which is useful when two nodes from different networks try to communicate with each other. This can be considered the foundation of the "network of networks" that is the Internet.

wireless communication
IP Addresses were designed so the computer in a group can be ATTND (or called) by their specific identity. of course its the same with humans.
this answers your question only :)
Thank you
IP has many purposes:
1- Addressing: IP gives uniqe addresses to a network and its elements.
2-IP interconnects different networks with different technologies.
3-IP classifes networks; class A, class B, and class C.
4-Routing so that networks can communicate between each other through IP.
Short for Internet Protocol address, an IP address is an address of a computer or other network device on a network using TCP/IP. For example, the number "69.72.169.241" is an example of such an address. These addresses are similar to an addresses used on a house and its purpose is to allows data to reach the appropriate destination on a network and the Internet.
Cheers!
