A good advert needs to be Creative & Original
I would say successful ads need two major elements in them\\
the good ad is the one that playes with the mind with any mean ... start with the expected and end with the unexpected will make an unforgetable memory to the viewer
ad is a explanation/intro of your product and it should be convincing and understandable to everage caliber people .
Anything totally new, original, creative, shocking (without being obscene or offensive) or hilarious would make it stand out. A trend of (TV) advertisements nowadays is to make them funny, interactive and appealing. The type of ads that will not have you zap it away during commercial breaks, or one that will have you point to it to your companions when passing by in a car or even show it spontaneously to people in the magazine you kept home, or post a link of it on Facebook etc.
When it comes to TV, I personally value the music choice in an ad.

Focus on need .. clear msg
a good add will always be effective when you pay attention to the below points:
-Select your traget audience
-keep the advertisement simple (ie- dont put too much information, just enough for the reader or viewer to see and get a hint of what is about)
-dont have very bright colours which might avoid the reader or viewer to view that
-dont degrade a competitive product because thats sometime demotivates a reader or is an eye opener to also try or view the other companis product
Simply, know your customers and know them very well, and then work with the creative to get something decent.
Ad should have stopping power and locking power in it. Now in the persence of dozens of tv channels its very important to have both these qualities in ad to get notice by TA while surfing through differernt channels
