This is an ongoing debate regarding who should be the ideal and most suitable person/profession to take the seat of chief executive officer (CEO) or equivalent positions/titles in any organization What do you think ?? and what angle do you see the issue from ?
It totally depends on the trait of the person. To some extent it depends on the core competency of the organisation also. In case of engineering company engineers will have some competitive advantage, and so on.
Normally sales people have aggresive attitude and they have experience of client handling, public relations etc which is necessary for a CEO. But still its not conclusive because competent people can come from any field.
I think its long bebate that how we can be better ,,, GIVE YOUR STAFF BEST OF YOU AND GET BEST OF THEM. MAN MANAGEMENT is the answer of your question, treat them as they want you to be traeted,,, every one does not deserve every thing ,,, make clear plans & objectives ,, tell them what exactly you want from them , what time and how,,,, W,S brain stroming can help you to improve day by day,,, give them trust ,,80% will feel your company as their own business. I am, P A Cariappa, an ideal CEO, should understand the " Flow structure", of the organization, and should known , what changes can be made to improve organizational progress, and how to generate business, from client's.
CEO has always concerned with Sales and Marketing as well as how to maximize the profit and minimize the cost? Finance also recognized by CEO, but HR is ignored because they are looking profit rather than human capital management. HR is a strategic partner of other department and HR can contribute how to increase the organizational productivity by providing right person to the right jobs? Ideal CEO will be if he or she deligates the power to other support unit.
What I think and have experienced working with Board of Directors,
The CEO or COO or CIO are the tagged positions for a person who is labled on a decesion, as peresented outside the organization or in public, but internally, now a days, almost all intellegent companies keep adviosry board and business anlaysts who think critically over the matters for which the decesion has to be made.
So basically, the outer picture of higher level postion is only tagged with some attractive titles of positions and seems centralized but the inner side of decesion making is based on decentralized systematic process where proper consideretation is given to the advisory board and business analyst and after going through the systematic process is decesion is approved or disapporved.
The reason to write above para, was that, a person should be enough intellegent to analyze the analysis of the experts and have the excellent communication skills to get the momentum and express the views in between, stake holders, investors or each and every person attached with organization.
So what I think of a CEO personality is that, a entity having extreme positive attitude with down to earth practical nature blended with politeness and intellegency to have a eye to grab opportunties and counter nature towards the problems, to apporach them, do not wait to let them come, may be a suitable person to hold the higher positions.
