What is the most important personality traits of an effective manager to keep his team motivated in all situtations of business?

The boss needs to "filter" outside distractions - administrative, disciplinary and otherwise to allow the team to flourish.  This calls for courage, bosses need to be brave to take on their own bosses and others at their level to keep the team on track.  It's not always popular, but it has to be done.
