If you're a manager position, have to do both.

As you must teach children to do good things, so in the spirit of gentleness, to know how to inspire them.

You do both. The art of manageing includes following a set of rules but also interpreting them your own way thus creating a new vision and also being a kind human being that shows appriciation for others and sets an example of ethical behaviour. Being sensitive to other people's needs and knowing what works for them is trully an art. Only a true visianery can handle such position where you dont have to manage but rather to gently apply and create principles of an ethical and loving environment.

The ability to influence others is crucial in your career and in management and leadership.

Being a great leader isn`t about hogging the spotlight, but about inspiring others to come into their greatness as well.

As working Senior Communication Manager, I would like to share my experience as below:

In practical, peoples cannot be managed or influenced. What we are doing is that, we are just getting them in our synchronization which is based on mutual benefits and as soon as that benefit is gained, the story gets over.

This applies to everyone, no matter, we can say that I was able to get him managed or in influcence, but reality is that the ties up are based on only mutual benefits, which may be of long term or short term.

I think that it is both, some people need to be directed to reach their targets others need to understand why so you don't have to influence them, but convince them, which is harder but lasts longer.

I think we need to do a bit of both. I do manage both up (the General Manager) and down (my staff) and try my best to leave a positive impressioin on them by leading them ethically.

One manages people by using their potential for productivity and showing directions.

Influence them by setting examples to follow.

I can only manage people through influencing them, using one way or another. Influence comes first. And I believe that's where management usually fails, when it becomes rather management through position.

I can manage things, figures, events, abstract idea's without necessary influencing them. I can "manage" to live with weird or unacceptable behaviours of people. But when managing them, there is always a degree of influence, no matter small or trivial (whether a ghost of a smile or a whole speech)
