maketing plays a major role in sales. if any product doesn't has good sales percentage, it means that marketing stretagy is poor. cunsumers never hesitate to purcharse a well known product. so when introduce a new product to the market we should plan to attract consumers. as we all know all businesses based on custermers. so if marketing is strong sales will never fall.
I think that marketing and sales are two sides of the same coin
if any one think that there is war between the marketing and sales, So you didn't understand marketing untill now.
Marketing is the Brain and sales is the muscles of your business.
Sales is one of Marketing tools, likes PR & CS etc.
to be a Professional sales you must to be a marketer but if you wanna be an expert marketer you've not to be sales ;)
In practical, to show the importance of each other on each other. But I think, both are different process and have equal importance.
This will take place only if there is no common company goals for all business departments to cooperate in order to achieve them.
Clear company strategies effectively communicated to all and ensuring that all departments' operational plans are aligned to these strategies should prevent such success obstacles.
In my MV-BMD service, I usually develop several things including ....
From this point on , I would like to hilight that sales, marketing and business development need to work in full harmony to produce the net desired results in revenues, profits, makret share, market penetration, customer satisfaction, .. etc.
Funny enough you mentioned the word "war" in your question, I see business development as the function which identifies the battle-field, marketing as the airforce which surveys the details of the battlefield and performs necessary attacks to pave the road for ground tropps to take control. Sales is the function which comes and reaps the net advantages in the form of purchase orders and sales.
I hop this sheds some light on the situation !!

Agree with Mr. HASHMI
When Sales do not happen one blames marketing strategy has not worked. But I have always believed if you are having sales acumen you will be able to devise your own marketing strategy for your product as per the need of the customer. However There has to be a Sales & Marketing Checklist in Place in order to determine whether there is a cold war between sales and marketing departments in your organization.
To achoeve integration in Sales & Marketing in your company you need to focus on following points.
1.Integrate Activities.
2.Integrate Process and Systems.
3.Enable Culture.
4.Integrate Organizational Culture.
