DearRizwan Siddiqi

According to your question

What is difference between Unix and Linux from the following view points:1-Key differences in architecture2-Adaptability3-Security4-Flexiblity

Linux is a UNIX Clone

Linux Is Just a Kernel

Linux is just a kernel. All Linux distributions includes GUI system + GNU utilities (such as cp, mv, ls,date, bash etc) + installation & management tools + GNU c/c++ Compilers + Editors (vi) + and various applications (such as OpenOffice, Firefox). However, most UNIX operating systems are considered as a complete operating system as everything come from a single source or vendor.

As I said earlier Linux is just a kernel and Linux distribution makes it complete usable operating systems by adding various applications. Most UNIX operating systems comes with A-Z programs such as editor, compilers etc. For example HP-UX or Solaris comes with A-Z programs.

License and cost

Linux is Free (as in beer [freedom]). You can download it from the Internet or redistribute it under GNU licenses. You will see the best community support for Linux. Most UNIX like operating systems are not free (but this is changing fast, for example OpenSolaris UNIX). However, some Linux distributions such as Redhat / Novell provides additional Linux support, consultancy, bug fixing, and training for additional fees.

  1. Architecture
    1. Process based architecture for each of the applications. If some thing needs to change in application or service level, restart specific process. This is good adavantage in Operating system level concept and dont required for complete system reboot.  This is the major difference between Windows and Linux.
    2. Windows Architecture is centralized and critical updates required restart of the system.
    3. Giving good flexibility in Architecture level and getting more windows based applications comparing Linux because user level flexibility
  2. Security
    1. Effective way of package management in Linux. If any of the package have PCI vulnarability, install latest compiled source or add patch into specific package for avoiding vulnarabilities
    2. Advantage of Windows, this can use any of the person and giving good support from there update website. If any of the package issue reported vulnarability, Microsoft releasing the fixes and rolled out through centralized repository for users. Users doesnt need much more technical level for avoiding Security threat.
  3. Flexibility
    1. Windows and Linux are flexible for expert level
    2. Windows is good for beginers
    3. Windows Desktop experience is very good for all users. Most of the applications are available for Windows
    4. Linux growing in desktop level and very good for Server level concept
    5. User support is very big issue for Linux
  4. Adaptability
    1. Its same for both operating system
