Nice question.............. To my opinion, In this competitive era, Sales is a blend of art & Science (Artistic Science) that is executed using art (Selling Skills) and Science (Sales Process).
I think sales is a skill that is learned like any other skill:
1) by understanding the basics through a teacher / university;
2) by doing it over and over again until you master it.
I must admit it's a difficult job but some people do have a knack of it more than others. I belive the2008 global meltdown is finally behind us so everything should grow positively.
I believe sales skills and approaches can be polished by the above mentioned and I believe sales skills and abilities can never be acquired or learned.that is what seperates super sellers from salespeople.

As the consumers knowledge and sources of information proloferates, the sales job becomes more difficult because you start by discussing miss enterpreted knwoledge in a lot of cases.
I see sales as being an art in the first place, supported and augmented by science in the second place.
