Exactly as Anayat suggests. To go a step further, I am a great believer in having a dictionary to hand and if I come across a word that I have either not heard before or am not sure of it's meaning I will look it up. Another useful exercise is to choose a particular word from a phrase or sentence you have heard and try and come up with alternative words which have the same meaning, if you struggle you can always use an "online" dictionary and look up synonyms for the word(s) you have chosen. One of the things that I have always tried to avoid is using words repetitively when writing, again it shows a lack of vocabulary and imagination: For example "It was a nice day so we went for a nice walk by the river and had a nice picnic", obviously I have exaggerated the use of the word "nice" just for this example, but I hope you get my meaning. A better way of writing this same piece without changing the meaning would be: "It was a lovely day and we had a pleasant walk by the river and enjoyed a tasty picnic". I would always advise proof reading what you have written and ensure that you don't fall into the "repetition" trap!! Don't be frightened to experiment with your English vocabulary and people will always offer constructive criticism, especially if they see that you are making an effort. I for one am impressed by the standard of the English that I witness on this Forum.
