Efficiency and effectiveness are mutually exclusive. A manager or employee who's efficient isn’t always effective and vice versa.Eg: One can be very efficient as an individual performer but if you make him an team lead or Manager he might not be effective in managing people

Efficiency: a manager simply firing unproductive employees.

Effective: a leader finding the root cause of the problem and mentoring employees to allow them to become productive.

The difference between efficient and effective is that efficiency refers to how well you do something, whereas effectiveness refers to how useful it is.

Efficiency in completing a specific task implies that the job has been completed to a satisfactory standard conforming  to all relevant rules, regulations and within budget etc etc. Effectiveness is the resultant of that efficiency, ie what was the outcome, did the company profit? I can't at the moment think of any good examples but I do know that lateral thinking or thinking outside the box, although not always efficient can sometimes be very effective!

Efficiency is all about how smoothly the process is being / has been carried out with the available resources where as the effectiveness is the extent to which  final output confirms the desired goal/objective.

If one employee has specific task was given to him:

He continued working for15 hours to finish the taks, he actually finished the task but due to the effort that he did he can not go to work for two days.

Here he is efficient but not effective, because he apply the concept: "doing things right" but not apply the concept: "doing the right things".

Efficiency refers to doing things in a right manner. Scientifically, it is defined as the output to input ratio and focuses on getting the maximum output with minimum resources. Effectiveness, on the other hand, refers to doing the right things. It constantly measures if the actual output meets the desired output.
