What are the five needs in Maslow’s Theory?
According to Maslow’s theory, human beings have needs at five levels;
· Physiological needs : warmth, shelter, food and sex or in other words the “animal” needs
· Safety needs: a sense of security, absence of fear
· Social needs: interaction with others, having friends
· Esteem needs: being well regarded by other people, appreciation
· Self - actualization: realizing individual potential, winning and achieving
When designing jobs working conditions and organizational structures, bear in mind the full range of needs in the Maslow hierarchy
1.physiogical needs
2.Safety needs
3.Love and Belonging
4.Esteem needs
5.Self Actualization
The esteem and the acutation needs are the ones that are most difficult to fulfill.
If an emploee has all the beasic needs the esteem and self actation needs can only be satisfied bya promotion. Hence in the long term emploee needs cannot be satisfied only by high slary and perks.
The HR dept needs to have a transparent IJP policy to nurture talent in the long run.
