DSL is Data Subscriber Line and Upgrading into IPTV Technology is Internet Protocol Television and it is the process of transmitting and broadcasting television programs through the Internet using Internet Protocol (IP).

DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line and is a technology used by Telcom operators to bring large amounts of data. IPTV or internet Protocol TV is essentially providing TV services whether live TV or Video on Demand over IP networks. To clarify this statement, the main criteria to support IPTV is that the DSL network must support data services which it inherently does. But for IPTV to be adopted, it needs to be sent at the right quality which requires faster networks such as ADSL or VDSL.

Digital Subscriber Line This is the type of line used in home Internet with the  variant name ADSL ( A for Assemitric)because the speed diference in outgoing and  incoming, usually home user downloading data is more than uploading, therefore downloading speed is higher than uploading in Commercial Circuits it is known as DSL

DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line and is a technology used by Telcom operators to bring large amounts of data over a normal telephone line or twisted copper line. So DSL inherently supports both voice and data.  DSL itself has subsequently grown its overall data speeds through upgrades - ADSL to ASDL+ to VDSL technologies to keep up with data demands of customers.

Other types of networks used by operators are Cable or HFC and Fibre networks which have also grown in parallel to DSL to offer high speed data services. Which type of network operators have used depends on how they started traditionally offering services.

IPTV or internet Protocol TV is essentially providing TV services whether live TV or Video on Demand over IP networks. In the case of DSL networks, a certain amount of speed and bandwidth is required to efficiently send video data with a quality that a customer will appreciate. To clarify this statement, the main criteria to support IPTV is that the DSL network must support data services which it inherently does. But for IPTV to be adopted, it needs to be sent at the right quality which requires faster networks such as ADSL or VDSL.

Besides the network upgrade from DSL to ADSL or VDSL, the operator needs to buy equipment to receive live content, convert it to IP data and send it over the network for a customer to view. Additionally if they would like to offer interactive or video on demand such as movies, then they have to invest in those infrastructure as well.

Finally, at the customer end, the operator must provide a device that can view the video content played over the network. Typically there is an ADSL modem available. This device has to be upgraded or connected to an IP Set-Top-Box called an IP Box or OTT device that connects allows the customer to view content on his TV through the box interface called a middleware.

IPTVInternet Protocol television, is a system through which television services are delivered using the Internet protocol suite over a packet-switched network such as a LAN or the Internet, instead of being delivered through traditional terrestrialsatellite signal, and cable television formats. Unlike downloaded media, IPTV offers the ability to stream the media in smaller batches, directly from the source. As a result, a client media player can begin playing the data (such as a movie) before the entire file has been transmitted. This is known as streaming media.

IPTV services may be classified into three main groups:

  • Live television, with or without interactivity related to the current TV show;
  • Time-shifted television: catch-up TV (replays a TV show that was broadcast hours or days ago), start-over TV (replays the current TV show from its beginning);
  • Video on demand (VOD): browse a catalog of videos, not related to TV programming.
