Micro management have a negative effect on all stake holders. It wastes mangement time and seen by subordinates as if they are not trusted to do the job with all the negative impact this usually cause.
Colse monitoring, on the other hand, must have a positive effect because it allows stakeholders to objectively manage performance and take the approriate actions of developing the staff who need it and rewarding the ones who meet or exceed thier agreed performance measures.
Its definitely negative. I think its important for employers to respect and trust employees privacy. Monitoring and micro management an employee will send a negative message and will create negative working environment.
However, there are few employees who needs to be monitored and micro managed caused they take advantage.
Doing this for the sole purpose of employees development is highly positive.
A micro manager, rather than telling an employee what task needs to be accomplished and by when, will watch the employee's actions closely and provide rapid criticism if the manager thinks it's necessary. Usually, the term has a negative connotation because an employee may feel that the micro manager is being condescending towards them, due to a perceived lack of faith in the employee's competency.
A micro manager may also avoid the delegation process when assigning duties and exaggerate the importance of minor details to subordinates. Micro manager is basically a mismanagement technique where not only employee suffers but employer also.
Positive way just bit changes can be fruitful to organization if u follow the below points.
1. Hiring right people for the right job
2. Employees should be accountable for their job work
3. Clear communication regarding job demand
4. Employee must be free to take decisions
5. Stake in company or good remuneration of well-done job
Some employees require and look for micro management. In the short run, being available to manage them closely will help them gain self-esteem, but in the long run I don't believe anyone wants an employee who needs his hand held all the time.
Likewise, if a manager does not have it in him to let his employees do their job, that person is not meant to be a manager bit an expert.
Manager should be able to switch between helicopter view and deep insight, and that capability is one of the things that make a good manager.
Certainly it creates negative impact, and insecurity among team members. Sometimes, it needs to do a micromanaging on some low performing team members. But, that too for a limited amount of duration until he becomes productive..
