Think of an FTP as a piece of real estate on the internet. This real estate is the space that you purchase from your hosting company and they provide you with an FTP like a driveway to access the property. An FTP will require a host name which is a URL, a username and a password to access. You can access your FTP real estate by going to your internet browser or windows explorer (finder in mac) and type ftp://your-host and you should be prompted to log in. We suggest using a free FTP client which is designed to allow you to easily transfer files to and from your FTP. Try FileZilla, its free, robust and very fast. You can upload and download any file type you like. You can put anything you like on your FTP, the same way you can upload any file type to a USB flash drive. You can access those uploaded files anywhere in the world provided you have an internet connection and your login information. Always be mindful of what you upload because FTP's are not100% secure and you are uploading to the web. Keep this in mind. Feel free to contact us if you need help or still have questions. If you need an FTP, we offer very inexpensive hosting options with unlimited space.
Any type of file can be downloaded via FTP. However, the files you download from an FTP site are usually compressed to save space and to reduce download times. The compression process usually turns the file into either a .zip file (PC) or a .sit file (Mac). To uncompress the file you'll need a program like WinZip (PC) or StuffIt Expander (Mac).
Any type of file you can download with FTP but be careful to download EXE or executable files.
