A mid career move for me needs to be exciting,challenging and monetarily rewarding too at the same time. The focus of my first job however was experience only, and I absolutely loved it!
Self-satisfaction derived from having a challenging job with a great perspective for advancement. The older you get, the more responsibilities you have that need be satisfied with, among others, financial reward.
It depends on the situtation what actually he or she wants. Some people motivated by money and some are motivated by comfortable working environment. However, I think that money is a good motivator tool for employees.
Multiple factors combined are what get me committed to a career. (Remember that there is a difference between a career and a job). Such factors are passion, financial rewards, recognition by the community, aptitude, and others.
A balance between both, you need to earn enough to live, and rewards on top of your performance will be a good motivator
