In my opinion, your question is similar to whether increasing expectation from life has good or bad effect.  If anything has positive side then it also has negative side.  Increasing sale target will have good impact on performance if it will be carefully evaluate.  Companies increase their sales target approximately12.5% above the actual one. The approach behind this is to at least achieve actual sales target. As in today's market, there is increase in competition so to sustain the existence sales target has to be increase and it will have upward trend. But if company will split target in classes and then asses achievements. For example, if a person will achieve target70-80% he will receive10% bonus and so on... but if will achieve complete target then he will get40% bonus as well as a trip. If this policy will be applied then increase sales target will be good impact on performance also it will encourage employee but if company will apply hire and fire policy mean if a employee fail to achieve target he will be fire then that will have bad impact on performance as employee will feel insecure.
