It all depend on the type of the product or service. But in general, your product should be appealing to the buyer to try it in the first place. You can start through promotions, offers and free samples. Once you have aquired the customer, you should be able to retain it. In my opinion, you can do that through good quality and great customer service. Constant marketing efforts such as promotions and offers also help.
Do not sell from the begining. A coffe does a lot. Go for a simple talk, not work related, and you will be remembered. Get familiar with the buyer, they are humans you know :). After2-3 meetings you will achieve almost anything if you know which strings to pull. A friend is better than a foe.
