You are right Mokhtar, however, I beleive that there could be some ideas that evolved from experience of such cases
It's a little difficult to handle such situations, and the manager needs maturity to handle..First of all, as a Manager you need to make the key staff realize that he is indeed a key staff, and you value his contributions.. Then you need to pursuade him to do what you want, and explain him why he should do that...
After a couple of interactions, Manager needs to be straight with the staff, and communicate what he expects from this key staff. As long as expectations from each other are understood the problems diminish related to attitude.. you need to set your tone in his conversations that you are serious about it...
At the same time, you should grow a back-up in case if this key staff chooses to leave for whatever reasons...
