Developing a website from scratch might sound a lil difficult in the start but once you try it, you feel its far time saving than downloading a template, understanding the code and customizing.

So I prefer writing my own code from scratch for building websites. This provides flexibility in the code for changing in future if required by the client. Its both time and money saving. It also helps you develop your own logic in a clean way.

Moreover as Mr. Mohamed Asik Jinnah mentioned, it also depends upon the project. I agree with him but that's a good approach for Senior developers. I ll highly recommend the junior developers to always go for building websites from scratch if you really want to learn and gain something worthy.

Mostly designers of this ERA ( :-) ) download a template, and change coding according to their needs and then upload with a custom name rather than working all from scratch. Usually this method is beneficial and fast as compare to coding from scrath and it requires less logic programming skills also.

Hopw you understand. :-)

It is depends upon the project. Either choosing framework (which is mostly from scratch) or CMS.

(for eg:)

CMS - Mostly changing the existing theme

1. For ecommerce website, we would not go from scratch. Instead, we may choose Drupal Commerce or Magento or Wordpress ecommerce plugin or prestashop etc.,

2. For blog website, we may choose wordpress

3. For forum website, we may choose vbulletin or phpbb or vanilla

Framework - Mostly from scratch

For customized website, we may choose framework like codeigniter, cakephp, symfony, Zend Framework, YII .

Realy.. Its fun.. I always prefer to build a web site from scratches. If you have knowledge of coding in HTML and little info of graphics and you can copy or take themes from other sites, you can build more professioal site from scratches.

If some one create a wheel, then why we create it again? So select and use frameworks, classes, functions as per your requirements, combine then, and use then. Save time and money :)

I believe that the best way to do the work is building it from scratch , no joomla or wordpress can do the work for you , there are a thousands of lines that you do not need to, but in scratch every line has his real meaning

Nowadays frontend developer has become a well defined designation in the field. I am working since2006 in web development and in those early days, web designers were not very skiled so we have to develop website from scratch to end. I have developed many websites from PSD to a completely dynamic website.

I've been developing sites from scatch as per my projects demand but If you are easy with CMS and its editing and client also agrees on it then i think there is no need to put extra time and increase project budget. CMS usage doesnt mean unskilled developer. This is a tool and it could be used.

Cheers!
