Social media managers bring the guests (clients, prospects) to the table and community managers welcome them in! One more thing, to me, "Social Media Managers" are largely tasked with producing relevant online content and figuring out how to incorporate social media into broader communications and marketing goals/campaigns.
"Community Managers," are a little more focused on listening and engaging with Friends/Fans/Followers, all while planning how to grow those online communities.

I believe a social media manager is more involved with strategies on "how" to engage users and deciding on what channels the organization must be involved with.
A social media manager is involved more when it comes to planning and strategy basically.
A community manager gets involved in the type of content being generated to the users and working more on how to attract those users turning them into leads, advocates and potential customers.

I don't believe there is a difference, it's just different terminology.

Although they might sound very similar, the role of a Community Manager -from my perspective- is more comprehensive, it involves managing online/social and offline communities, he/she is also responsible of Offsite SEO, in terms of establishing relationships with influencers and building organic back links I hope that helps :) Farouk Achoui Digital Marketing Strategist

In my opinion, community manager is term derived from the historical beginnings of social media, i.e.
discussion forums such as those on the vBulletin platform.
These are communities for niche topics, such as a forum/community for horse riding enthusiasts or whatever.
A social media manager is a manager of a company's/organisation's presence on major social media platforms.

A community manager manages the bigger platform of social media. Basically, a community manager, manages the "community" upon which the company's and the clients' are thriving. From managing social media content, creating strategies, blogging, writing articles and communicating with the followers of both, all, not necessarily on one social media platform.
