As per my experience in B2C business marketing is very important compared to sales because marketing is the driving force for arousing desire that leads to a successful sales.
On the other hand in B2B business there is no such big marketing activities.
You come across rational customers who judge your company through your attitude and go for sales discussion.

I don't think you should separate sales from marketing.
For years sales people where using marketing techniques without knowing it to create repeat business and loyalty.
Loyalty these days is a function of the transactional process which involves marketing and service.
These days these two activities are inseparable.
As a supply chain purist, sales and marketing are part of a chain.
AS they say, the chain is as strong as the weakest link.

i am agreed with syed in B2C processes, implementing a comprehensive marketing program is mandatory .
in B2C the defined tasks in marketing is much far from sales tasks.
hence in B2B program sales staff do marketing and sales in the same time and close together.
