  • Andragogy is an adult focused teaching approach while Pedagogy is a child focused teaching approach.
  • Both methods of teaching are problem centered.
  • Pedagogy is more systematic than andragogy because of the complexity of the students while andragogy is motivational.

Pedagogy refers to theories and approaches to teaching and learning.

Since the term derives from the Greek word for 'child', some have suggested its principles do not apply automatically to adult teaching and learning, for which the term andragogy has been used. Malcolm Knowles an American practitioner and theorist of adult education used the term andragogy to describe a set of principles of teaching and learning specifically relating to adults. Andragogy is defined as “the art and science of helping adults learn”. Knowles identified the six principles of adult learning as:

  • Adults are internally motivated and self-directed
  • Adults bring life experiences and knowledge to learning experiences
  • Adults are goal oriented
  • Adults are relevancy oriented
  • Adults are practical
  • Adult learners like to be respected

Pedagogy means child leading learning. On the otherhand, Andragogy learning means self directed adult learning.
