Hi,

Someone who volunteers to do something without being pressed will certaintly do it the right way and will for sure take special care as most of the time, if he/she doesn't direclty benfit from it, will at least expect some thanking /flattery or praise from the others.

On the contrary, if someone is pressed to do something, especially if he doesn't like it, he will for sure not make big efforts in doing it as he takes no advantage in it.

As for the second part of the question, it looks like it has a military origin whcih I don't really know about.

Thanks everyone.

A volunteer is someone who will do the task without being forced to do it, while a pressed man is forced to do it as he may not have the choice.

Actually I don't know its origin.

i think it maybe means  that you will get the work better done out of volunteers who are people willing  to do something with pleasure  rather than out of people who have to

Someone who do voluntary for a duty will probably do hard effort into the duty than someone who is forced to do the same duty.

It has military origin. The origin of this is occurance in the early18th century about Royal Navy.

I think that the origin of this quote comes from the Royal Navy in the eighteenth century when working conditions were so awful that “press gangs” used to prowl around towns kidnapping people to join up
