If you are a research and development engineer, then go for Solidworks without a second thought. If you do development, obviously there are chances of hell lot of iterations. There comes the question of flexibility, which solidworks assurance you at any point. May be you can get the assistance of other CAD packages for making shop drawings and model, but Solidworks is best for development.

In one word:- Imagination is the limit.

Using SolidWorks or other major CAD tools, we can develop a part to complex machines. Completely in3D. Its is used in Aviation, Automobile, Machinery, Furniture and many more industries.

Also additional features like sheetmetal, weldment, surface design etc is available.

From recent versions, we can do drawing or part automation using driveworks. In this case a non technical person can provide inputs and generate drawing & parts based on the inputs. These futures shall lead them in futures. Also a lot of repetative works & time of enineers can be saved.
