Is it better for a project Manager to focus on management and planing or to dig into technical details of the project with the technical lead ?

I mean should he challenge the tech lead and the team for the decision taken while doing the project or this will make him loose focus on his pm activities

As long as the project is progressing smoothly as planned and there are no issues, PM should focus on his planning, and other management activities. PM should involve in technical details when there is an issue so that he can understand the problem better and should be able to make a better judgement on contingency plans needed, and can report to the issue to sponsor alongwith the proposed solution (contingency) he has. Please note that, PM should trust the tech lead however he should try to dig into more details whenever there are issues so that the situation can be in control (issue can be correctly prioritized and proper contingency and mitigation measures can be taken)..

As the job demands he should perform within the scope.  A Project Manager if hired for technical expertise then he need to dig into technicalities otherwise his job is to Lead a team to achieve the target within time and budget.

For project manager going through details of technical issues continuously is waste of time but in destructive decisions something he can deal with technical issues with the technical managers

The key word to answer your question is "Application area". i.e., the main role of project manager is how to manage the project through awareness of application area

From my point of view, it will be better not to go through technicalities whether he is aware with it or not, unless there is a technical issue which may lead to an issue he must try to find solutions through the experts and to document this issur in leasons learned and issues log

The job of project manager is to manage project smoothly. The specific duties of project manager vary from industry to industry, company to company and even project to project. But there are some key responsibilities, if perform well will help successful completion of project. These are:

  • Planning
  • Organizing
  • Leading
  • Comtrolling

In addition to above, sometime project manager involves to dig technical details. Here I want to give a parctical example. I was project manager of a paper sack factory and established one production line. At the time of establishment of2nd production line, I decided to reduce cost. I arranged a meeting with Plant Manager. After meeting we concluded  that one Glue Line is sufficient to run both production lines and we saved at least half million euroes.

If its about project manager, I would go for management and planning of the project. If the well planned and maneged there is no need to get digged into technical details. If so, he can delegate to project executive.

For me as a PM, I would go for project management and planning in the first place. If every thing is going OK, there is no need to dig into technical details.

My preference: that the PM focus on the project management tasks - which are a LOT - but have a high-level understanding of the technical side of the project.  The PM should manage the technical team leader who would be responsible for the technical details

AS per PMI- It is better for a project Manager to focus on management and planing nor to dig into technical details of the project with the technical lead
