Depending on what your product offering is, I would say both might be good.

 

I mentioned in a previous email that I receive monthly emails from a beauty spa, notifying me of promotions for the month. I actually like receiving their emails and it clicks straight through to the website so I can book online. 

 

Social media sometimes does become slightly cluttered with ads... maybe you can combine an email campaign and a social media campaign and see what yields the best results for your industry. If you have a databasis of loyal customers who you can target via email marketing, I say why not?

I'd have to say social media marketing, especially if it's B2C, since already most of the people are linked up to FB, Twitter, G+ and all the other web sites, plus it's user friendly and it attracts the perfect segment you're aiming for, I don't think people would appreciate spamming their E-mails with advertisement and such
