I'll prefer to explain the term "collocations" before answering this question.
"Collocations" are combination of two or more words which are used together in English language by native English speakers. Using substitute of these words make it hard to understand the converstation, although grammatically it is still correct.
Mostly there are six type of collocations used frequently. These are:
1. Adjective + Noun
2. Noun + Noun
3. Verb + Noun
4. Adverb + Adjective
5. Verb + Prepositional phrase
6. Verb + Adverb
Examples:
1. Strong tea (powerful tea X)
2. Commit suicide (undertake suicide X)
3. Quick shower (fast shower X)
So it helps us to sound natural when speaking or writing by using collocations.
